Puerto Rico's continued tourism growth creates opportunities to introduce travelers to the island's western coast, central mountains, southern communities, regional food, and outdoor experiences.
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, September 10, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Puerto Rico's tourism industry continues to reach new milestones, creating an opportunity to encourage visitors to experience more of the island beyond its most familiar destinations. Hospitality professional Robert Hoffecker believes helping travelers discover Puerto Rico's different regions can support local communities while giving visitors more reasons to extend their stays and return in the future.
San Juan remains an important center of Puerto Rico tourism. Its hotels, restaurants, historic attractions, nightlife, and transportation connections make it a natural starting point for many visitors. Hoffecker believes the capital's strength can also serve as a gateway to a much larger Puerto Rico experience.
"San Juan gives visitors an incredible introduction to Puerto Rico, but it does not tell the entire story," Hoffecker said. "Someone can have a great first few days here and still have the western coast, the mountains, southern communities, and completely different food and outdoor experiences left to discover."
Puerto Rico Tourism Continues to Expand
Puerto Rico welcomed an estimated 8.1 million visitors in 2025, an increase of approximately 8% from the previous year, according to data reported by Discover Puerto Rico. The island also recorded nearly 7.9 million lodging room nights and approximately $1.99 billion in lodging revenue during the year.
Those numbers reflect a tourism industry with significant demand. They also raise a larger question about how that activity can reach more communities.
Visitor patterns already suggest growing interest outside the San Juan metropolitan area. Discover Puerto Rico reported that about 60% of travelers visited the Metro region in 2025, while roughly 35% to 40% explored the East or West and 31% visited the South.
Travelers who explored some of those regions also tended to stay longer. Visitors to the West averaged 6.6 nights on the island, while those visiting the South averaged 5.7 nights. The overall visitor average was approximately five nights.
"Regional travel gives people another reason not to rush through the island," Hoffecker said. "If someone realizes there are several completely different experiences within Puerto Rico, adding another day or planning another trip starts to make sense."
Western Puerto Rico Offers a Different Coastal Experience
Puerto Rico's western region shows how regional variety can broaden the visitor experience.
Communities such as Rincón, Aguadilla, and Mayagüez offer travelers access to beaches, surfing, restaurants, outdoor recreation, and a different pace from the metropolitan area. Aguadilla's Rafael Hernández International Airport also provides another point of entry for travelers who want to begin their trip outside San Juan.
For hospitality businesses, encouraging regional exploration does not require convincing every visitor to travel across the entire island. Hoffecker believes the better approach is to understand what individual travelers enjoy and make recommendations accordingly.
"If a guest tells you they love surfing or want a quieter coastal experience, that gives you something useful to work with," he said. "Instead of handing them a generic list of attractions, you can explain that another part of Puerto Rico may fit exactly what they are looking for."
The Central Mountains Add Another Side to Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico's central region provides a very different experience from its beaches and coastal communities.
Mountain towns, coffee-growing areas, hiking opportunities, local restaurants, and scenic drives allow visitors to experience the island from another perspective. Coffee tourism can be particularly effective because it connects agriculture, food, history, and local businesses in a single experience.
For travelers who have already visited Puerto Rico, these experiences can also create a reason to return.
Someone who spent a first vacation exploring San Juan and the coast may build a future trip around mountain communities, coffee farms, hiking, or food.
Hoffecker believes tourism businesses can make those possibilities easier to understand by offering realistic information about travel times, transportation, activities, and what visitors can comfortably accomplish in one day.
"The recommendation has to be practical," he said. "It does not help to tell someone about a great place if you make it sound like a twenty-minute trip when it really requires most of the day. Good hospitality includes helping people understand what an experience actually involves."
Southern Communities Can Benefit From Greater Exploration
Puerto Rico's southern region presents another opportunity for tourism growth.
Ponce provides museums, architecture, plazas, restaurants, and cultural attractions, while communities throughout the South offer coastal experiences, local food, history, and access to areas that may feel very different from a traditional San Juan itinerary.
Recent booking patterns suggest that interest is growing. Discover Puerto Rico reported in June 2026 that short-term rental nights in the South were pacing about 26% higher on average for the following six months than the previous year. The West and Central regions were each pacing about 17% higher.
Expanding tourism geographically can help distribute visitor activity while giving travelers a wider selection of experiences.
Regional Food Can Become a Reason to Explore
Food provides one of the easiest ways to introduce visitors to different communities.
Puerto Rico's 2024 Visitor Profile found that 84% of travelers participated in gastronomic experiences, while 40% said food influenced their decision to choose Puerto Rico as a destination.
Regional restaurants, bakeries, coffee farms, seafood establishments, markets, and roadside food stops can turn a drive across the island into part of the vacation rather than simply transportation between attractions.
"A restaurant recommendation can change the direction of someone's entire afternoon," Hoffecker said. "They drive somewhere for lunch, notice something interesting nearby, stop at another business, and suddenly they have discovered a part of Puerto Rico that was never on their original itinerary."
Hospitality Businesses Can Help Visitors Explore
Hotels and other hospitality businesses can play an important role in connecting travelers with experiences beyond their immediate surroundings.
Front desk teams and concierges can learn more about different regions. Hotels can build relationships with local guides, recreation providers, restaurants, cultural organizations, and transportation companies. Employees can also ask guests about their interests before making recommendations.
Hoffecker believes the goal should not be sending every traveler to the same collection of popular attractions. Instead, hospitality professionals can help visitors understand how much variety exists across the island.
That can include recommending surfing in the West to an outdoor traveler, suggesting coffee country to someone interested in food, or helping a returning visitor build a trip around southern Puerto Rico.
"Puerto Rico does not need every visitor to experience everything in one trip," Hoffecker said. "It may actually be better when someone leaves realizing how much they still want to see."
As Puerto Rico's tourism industry continues to grow, encouraging exploration beyond its best-known visitor areas could help create opportunities for more communities while strengthening the island's appeal as a destination people can experience differently each time they return.
